FAQs for Tattoo First Timer: The Questions You’re Too Embarrassed to Ask
We get it. if you’re a tattoo first timer you’ll have a lot of questions—some totally reasonable, some a bit weird, and some that you’d never dare ask out loud. But at Studio51, no question is too silly, and nothing shocks us anymore (honestly, we’ve been doing this for 30+ years). Whether you’re worried about passing out, or if your nan can come watch, we’ve got you.
In this cheeky, brutally honest guide, we answer the tattoo FAQs for first timers that no one else seems to cover—but everyone’s secretly Googling.
Before You Get Tattooed
Do I have to know exactly what I want?
Nope. You’re allowed to be unsure. Bring references and ideas. Your artist can help you design custom tattoo.
Studio51 Tip: Bring ideas you like, reference pictures of tattoo styles. We’ll make it yours. Let us know that you’re a tattoo first timer, we understand that it’s a big decision to make.
Can I get a tattoo if I’ve had a drink?
Absolutely not. Alcohol thins your blood, makes you bleed more, and can affect your decision-making. Also, we legally can’t (and won’t) tattoo anyone under the influence.
Soz, no Dutch courage here.
Should I bring someone with me?
You can—but check first. At Studio51, we’re happy for you to bring one supportive companion. But leave the entourage at home.
What should I wear?
Wear something comfy that gives easy access to the area being tattooed. Loose, dark clothes are ideal. If you’re getting your thigh done, don’t wear skinny jeans.
Pro move: Bring a jumper or hoodie. It can get chilly once you’re sat still for a while.
What if I’m on my period?
Totally fine. But be aware that your pain tolerance may be lower. If you’re feeling bloated or sensitive, it might not be the most comfortable time.
During the Tattoo Session
Does being tattooed hurt?
Yes, but probably not as much as you think. Most describe it as scratchy, stingy, or like a sunburn. Pain levels vary based on the location and your personal tolerance.
Least painful areas: Forearm, upper arm, thigh. Most painful: Ribs, feet, sternum, spine.
Can I take a break during the session?
Of course! Just let your artist know. We’re happy to pause for water, a loo break, or a quick mental reset.
You’re not a wimp—you’re human.
What happens if I move?
Try not to—but if you flinch, sneeze, or twitch, your artist will stop. We’ll guide you back into a steady position and keep it safe.
Can I bring snacks?
Yes! Especially for longer sessions. Just avoid messy, smelly, or noisy food. And maybe share with your artist if it’s something good.
Can I listen to music or podcasts?
Absolutely. Bring headphones, zone out, and vibe. Just make sure you can still hear us when we need to check in with you.
After the Tattoo
Will it bleed or scab?
Avoid: Swimming, saunas, heavy workouts, and sun exposure while healing.
What should I put on it?
Your artist will give you tailored aftercare advice. Usually, it’s fragrance-free moisturiser or a tattoo-specific cream. Use it sparingly.
Can I work out after getting tattooed?
Light activity is okay after a few days, but avoid anything that stretches or rubs the tattooed area. Sweating into a fresh tattoo is a no-go.
What if I think it’s infected?
Yes. Always. We’d rather stop for a breather than have you faint mid-line.
How long before it stops itching?
Redness and tenderness are normal. But if it’s hot, oozy, or smells funky—get it checked. You can always message us for advice.
Can I go back for touch-ups?
Yep! Sometimes ink settles unevenly, especially in tricky spots. We offer free or discounted touch-ups depending on the piece. Just ask.
The Awkward Tattoo Questions
Can I get a tattoo over scars or stretch marks?
Usually, yes—but it depends on the type and age of the scar. A consult will help us assess what’s possible.
Can I get a tattoo if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. Come back when your body’s done healing and you’re feeling fully yourself again.
Can I get tattooed on my bum?
Yes, if you’re brave enough to sit weirdly for a while. Just be ready for some interesting contortions—and maybe bring a cushion. We do not recommend this area for a tattoo first timer.
Will my tattoo stretch if I gain/lose weight?
It can, but it usually holds up well unless the change is dramatic. Placement matters—ask your artist about body placement.
