Summer, sand, and healing piercings.

“When I met you in the summer…” It’s the soundtrack to holidays, festivals and questionable dancing into the night. Keeping piercings clean in the summer is easy when you know how, and we’re here to teach you.

A fresh piercing doesn’t care that the weather is nice. It still needs the same aftercare it needed in January. In fact, thanks to sweat, sun cream, swimming and travel, keeping a piercing clean during summer can sometimes require even more attention.

The good news? You don’t have to spend the entire summer hiding indoors with a saline spray in one hand and a travel pillow in the other. You just need to understand the challenges and plan ahead.

Why Is Summer Harder on Healing Piercings?

Summer creates the perfect storm of irritation.

Warmer temperatures mean more sweating. More sweating means more moisture, dirt and bacteria around your jewellery. Add sun cream, swimming, festivals, and long journeys … it’s easy to see why many piercing problems seem to appear between June and September.

Healing piercings thrive on consistency. Summer thrives on spontaneity.

The trick is finding a balance between enjoying yourself and looking after your piercing.

Does Sweat Affect a Healing Piercing?

Sweat itself isn’t the enemy. Your body sweats naturally, and a little perspiration isn’t going to ruin your piercing.

The problem comes when sweat is allowed to sit around the jewellery for long periods, especially after exercise, hot weather or a long day at a festival.

Sweat can mix with:

  • Sun cream.
  • Makeup.
  • Dust.
  • Dirt.
  • Hair products.
  • General everyday grime.

This build-up can irritate the piercing and make it feel sore, itchy or swollen.

What Should You Do?

If you’ve been sweating heavily:

  • Clean your piercing as normal with saline solution.
  • Shower after exercise where possible.
  • Gently dry the area with a clean paper towel.
  • Avoid constantly touching the jewellery.

Area 51 recommends cleaning your piercing once daily with saline solution and avoiding harsh cleaning products that can irritate healing tissue.

Can Sun Cream Cause Problems?

Sun cream protects your skin and should always be used. However, fresh piercings and SPF don’t always get along.

Many people accidentally coat their jewellery in sun cream, especially around:

  • Helix piercings.
  • Tragus piercings.
  • Flat piercings.
  • Nostril piercings.
  • Eyebrow piercings.
  • Navel piercings.

When sun cream builds up around jewellery, it can trap dirt and irritate the piercing channel.

Summer Tip

Apply sun cream carefully around the piercing rather than directly on it. If product accidentally gets onto the jewellery, gently clean the area as part of your normal aftercare routine.

Is It Safe to Swim with a New Piercing?

This is probably the biggest summer question we get. Unfortunately, the answer isn’t the one most people want to hear.

Swimming Pools

Swimming pools contain chemicals that can irritate healing tissue.

The Sea

Sea water isn’t sterile. While many people assume sea water helps piercings heal, natural water contains bacteria, sand, salt and pollutants that can irritate a fresh piercing.

Lakes and Rivers

These carry their own bacteria and contaminants and should also be avoided during healing.

Area 51’s aftercare guidance (https://area51.co.uk/piercing-care/) recommends avoiding pools, lakes and hot tubs during the healing process to reduce the risk of complications.

If your holiday revolves around swimming, it may be worth waiting until after your trip before getting pierced.

Festival Season vs Fresh Piercings

Festivals are amazing.

They are also terrible healing environments.

A healing piercing would like:

  • Clean bedding.
  • Daily aftercare.
  • Plenty of water.
  • Eight hours of sleep.

A festival usually provides:

  • Dust.
  • Mud.
  • Sweat.
  • Glitter.
  • Warm cider.
  • Two baby wipes and a dream.

The biggest challenges at festivals are maintaining cleanliness and sticking to your aftercare routine.

Festival Survival Tips

  • Pack travel-sized saline spray.
  • Keep clean tissues in your bag.
  • Wash your hands before touching your piercing.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Avoid letting friends inspect your piercing after six pints.

Trust us on that last one.

Can Heat Make a Piercing Swell?

Yes, sometimes. Hot weather naturally increases blood flow near the skin’s surface. This can occasionally make healing piercings appear slightly more swollen or feel more sensitive than usual.

This is especially common with cartilage piercings such as:

  • Helix.
  • Conch.
  • Tragus
  • Industrial.

Mild swelling during hot weather isn’t always a sign that something is wrong.

However, significant swelling, severe pain, unusual discharge or jewellery becoming embedded should always be assessed by a professional.

What About Summer Sports?

Summer often means increased activity.

Whether you’re running, cycling, hiking, playing football or spending hours in the gym, physical activity creates extra sweat and opportunities for accidental knocks. A quick clean after exercise can help prevent irritation from developing.

Be particularly careful with:

Activity Piercing Risk
Running
Sweat and headphone irritation
Cycling
Helmet pressure
Football
Accidental knocks
Gym training
Sweat and equipment contact
Water sports
Water exposure and impact

Summer Holidays Can Disrupt Your Aftercare Routine

One of the biggest causes of piercing problems isn’t swimming or sweating.

It’s forgetting.

When you’re rushing through airports, sitting by the pool or trying to remember which tent is yours, aftercare can slip down the priority list.

That’s why a simple travel kit makes such a difference.

Your Summer Piercing Kit

  • Sterile Saline Spray for easier cleaning.
  • Clean tissues for drying after cleaning.
  • Travel pillow to protect ear piercings.
  • Water bottle to keep you Hydrated.

What Signs Should You Watch Out For?

Not every irritated piercing is infected. Summer can create temporary irritation that settles quickly once the area is cleaned and protected.

However, seek advice if you notice:

  • Increasing redness.
  • Excessive swelling.
  • Yellow or green discharge.
  • Persistent pain.
  • Jewellery becoming embedded.
  • Fever or feeling unwell.

When in doubt, contact your piercer.

It’s always easier to solve a small problem than a big one.

Enjoy Summer, Just Don't Forget Your Piercing

Summer should be about making memories, not worrying about your helix.

With a little planning, you can enjoy festivals, holidays, beach trips and barbecues while keeping your piercing healthy and happy.

Stay hydrated.

Pack your saline spray.

Be sensible around swimming pools.

And remember:

Your piercing doesn’t know it’s summer. It still expects the same care it needed when it was raining in February.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can sweat infect a piercing?

Sweat itself doesn’t cause infection, but allowing sweat, dirt and product build-up to sit around the jewellery can increase irritation.

It’s best to avoid getting sun cream directly into the piercing channel or around fresh jewellery.

No. Sea water contains bacteria, sand and pollutants that can irritate healing tissue.

Travel-sized saline spray and clean tissues are your best friends.

Hot weather can sometimes cause mild swelling and sensitivity, particularly in cartilage piercings.

Ideally, allow several months of healing time before major holidays, festivals or extended travel.
