What to Expect When Getting Your First Tattoo

Getting your first tattoo can feel like stepping into the unknown. You’ve got questions. You’ve got nerves. You’ve possibly got a Pinterest board full of ideas that range from deeply meaningful to “what was I thinking?” But fear not—what to expect when getting your first tattoo is exactly what we’re here to cover. At Studio51 in Basingstoke, we believe your first tattoo should be as fun and memorable as the ink itself. Think of this guide as your ink-stained roadmap—with all the cheeky banter and clinical-level advice you’d expect from your favourite uncle with a needle.

The Vibe Check: Studio51 Experience 101

Walking into a tattoo studio for the first time can feel intimidating. But Studio51 isn’t your average studio. We mix serious hygiene standards with seriously good chat. Here’s what makes us different:

  • Friendly, no-pressure consultations (ask us anything—we’ve heard it all).
  • Clean, fully licensed premises with hospital-grade hygiene.
  • Over 30 years of tattooing and piercing experience.
  • A warm welcome whether you’re ink-curious or ink-obsessed.

We want your first tattoo to be a story you enjoy telling—not just something you survive.

Tattoo culture has come a long way since the 90s, and we’ve been there through all the trends, from tribal armbands to minimalistic linework. One thing that’s stayed the same? People want to feel safe, seen, and supported—especially when it’s their first time under the needle. At Studio51, that’s exactly what we deliver.

Step 1: Choosing the Right Tattoo and Artist

Know What You Want (But Keep an Open Mind).

You don’t need to walk in with a finalised design—but it helps to know what vibe you’re after. Is it symbolic? Is it decorative? Is it just cool-looking? Our artists are happy to work with your ideas, suggest improvements, or design something custom.

Top Tip: Bring references, not replicas. Your tattoo should be uniquely yours.

Start by considering size, placement, and style. Want something small and discreet, or bold and full of flair? First tattoos often end up on forearms, shoulders, ankles or behind the ear. But ultimately, the best place for your tattoo is wherever feels right to you.

Choose the Right Artist for the Job.

Different artists have different styles—dotwork, black and grey realism, traditional, fine line, and more. Check out our portfolios, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. A good artist will explain their process and make you feel confident.

It’s a bit like dating—you want someone who gets you. Once you find the right match, everything flows better.

Step 2: Booking Your Appointment

We recommend a consultation for first timers. This lets you:

  • Meet your artist.
  • Discuss your design, placement, and size.
  • Ask any burning questions.
  • Get a feel for the space.

You’ll book your appointment and pay a deposit (usually deducted from the final cost). We’ll explain how to prepare for the big day.

If you’re not quite ready to commit to an appointment, no worries. We’re happy to give advice, chat design ideas, and walk you through how the process works, no strings attached.

Step 3: Prepping for Your Tattoo Session

Here’s your essential first-timer prep checklist:

  • Eat a good meal beforehand—low blood sugar equals light-headedness.
  • Stay hydrated—great for your skin and overall healing.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine for 24 hours—both thin the blood.
  • Dress for access and comfort—dark, loose clothing is ideal.
  • Moisturise leading up to the day—but skip lotions on the actual day.
  • Bring ID—we follow UK age regulations strictly.

Bonus points if you bring headphones, a playlist, or a mate for moral support (space allowing). If you’re nervous, that’s completely normal. Try deep breathing, or bring a podcast or a game on your phone to stay distracted during the session. We’ve had clients nap mid-tattoo, and others chat our ears off—whatever works for you.

Does It Hurt?

Let’s be honest: it’s not tickles and butterflies. But most people find it bearable. Some even enjoy the buzz (literally). Pain levels depend on placement, size, and your personal tolerance. We’ll coach you through it—and take breaks if you need.

Most first-timers describe it as scratchy, stingy, or like a mild sunburn. It’s uncomfortable, but not unbearable. And the adrenaline and excitement tend to take the edge off.

How Long Will It Take?

Depends on your design. Small, simple tattoos can take under an hour. Larger or more detailed work might need multiple sessions. Your artist will give you a time estimate in advance.

Don’t worry—we’ll keep you entertained or give you space to zone out. Your comfort is always our priority.

Step 5: Aftercare – Keeping That Ink Fresh

Immediately After:

  • Your artist will clean and wrap your tattoo.
  • Leave the bandage on for a few hours.
  • Wash gently with unscented soap and lukewarm water.
  • Pat dry with a paper towel—don’t rub.

Immediately After:

Don’t smother your tattoo.

Avoid creams for the first few days—dry healing is key.

Keep it clean and avoid touching with dirty hands.

Days 5+: Moisturise

Use a tattoo-specific or fragrance-free moisturiser

  • Don’t scratch or pick at scabs.
  • Avoid soaking (no baths, pools, hot tubs).
  • Stay out of the sun until fully healed.

Healing doesn’t happen overnight. Expect peeling, itching, and the odd scab—don’t panic, it’s all normal. If anything looks or feels off, give us a call. We’re always here to advise.

Healing Time

Most tattoos take 4–6 weeks to fully heal. During that time, follow your artist’s instructions and be gentle with your skin. For bigger pieces, we’ll schedule a check-in or even a touch-up session if needed.

Tattoo First Timer FAQs

Can I Get a Tattoo If I’m on Medication?

Some medications, especially blood thinners, may not be compatible. Always check with your GP and inform your artist during consultation.

What If I Change My Mind?

We won’t tattoo you unless you’re 100% sure. You can change your design up to the day of the appointment. After that, it’s forever—so speak up!

Can I Bring a Friend?

Yes, but space is limited. Check with us beforehand. Emotional support mates are welcome, full entourages—not so much.

Will My Tattoo Fade?

All tattoos fade slightly over time. But with good aftercare and sun protection, your ink will stay fresh for years.

Can I Work Out After Getting a Tattoo?

Avoid heavy sweating or friction around the tattoo for at least a week. If you must work out, make sure your clothing doesn’t rub the tattooed area.
